Step 1: Network Planning
DHN-910 Quick Starter Guide & Networking Basics
When you have finished installing this network starter kit, two of your existing computers will be physically connected together in a network -– a cable will go from each computer to either a phone jack or to the other computer.
First decide where you will be placing the computers. If they are to be in different rooms, make sure that the phone jacks in each room are connected to the same phoneline and are working. Plug a telephone into the jack and dial the phone number for that line, if you get a busy signal then you are indeed on the correct line. If you are not able to ascertain if your phone jacks are on the same line, you may wish to call your local telephone company for verification and any needed service.
If you plan to set up two computers in the same room, you can use a single phone jack. Keep in mind that at all times at least one of the cards on your phoneline network must be plugged into a phone jack. Also keep in mind that the phone jack must be for an active phone line. The phone line network cards depend on the small voltage that it is on your phonelines to function properly.
